Construction Injuries
Statistics show that construction workers labor in some of the most
hazardous conditions in the US. While the construction industry only
employs about 6% of the American workforce, 20% of on-the-job fatalities
occur among construction workers. In 2006, there were 1,226 construction
workplace fatalities recorded.
The personal injury legal team of RJ Hurwitz, P.C., is experienced in
handling the types of catastrophic injuries that arise in the construction
industry. We know how to investigate the facts of a case, discover the

What is a catastrophic injury from a construction job? A catastrophic
injury or illness is one that occurs suddenly and without any warning. It
can include: back and neck injuries (sometimes called whiplash injury,
soft tissue injury, connective tissue injury, or facet joint injury);
head injury; brain injury; spinal cord injury; burn injury; broken
bones and fractures; knee injury; shoulder injury; muscle and ligament
injury; herniated or bulging disc; reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD
also known as complex regional pain syndrome or CRPS); loss of
hearing; loss of sight; loss of smell; loss of touch; paralysis;
amputation; paraplegia; quadriplegia; and even death.
According to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration,
the leading cause of catastrophic injuries at construction sites include:
- Falls. Falls from elevation account for one-third
of all construction deaths. Employees who work six or more feet above
a lower level must be provided with fall protection, but employers
often ignore those safety regulations, leading to falls though
unprotected sides, wall openings, floor holes and scaffolding.
- ‘Struck-by’ objects. Construction workers are
often struck by equipment or falling objects on the job site. About
three of every four struck-by fatalities on construction sites involve
heavy equipment, including trucks and cranes. Falling objects such as
masonry blocks are also a hazard.
- Stairways, Ladders and Scaffolding. Stairways and
ladders are major sources of injuries and fatalities among
construction workers, while scaffold accidents account for an average
of 4,500 injuries and 50 deaths each year.
- Electrical Hazards. Shock, electrocution, fires
and explosions are constant risks on job sites. Accidents can be
caused by contact with power lines, lack of ground-fault protection
and cords improperly wired to an electrical circuit.
- Trenching and Excavation. Trenching and
excavation are real risks on construction sites. Cave-ins may be
caused by improper sloping and the failure to use a trench box.
Asphyxiation due to lack of oxygen in a confined space is a
risk, as is inhalation of toxic fumes or electrocution and
explosions when workers strike buried gas or electric lines.
- Highway Work Zones. Employees who work in highway
zones are in one of the most dangerous occupations in the United
States, according to OSHA officials. As many as 1,100 work zone
fatalities occur each year.
The medical costs associated with caring for a person who has suffered
a catastrophic injury can be astronomical. That's why a catastrophic
personal injury claim should be filed as soon as possible after the
accident to recover costs for hospitals bills, future medical bills, lost
wages, loss of enjoyment of life, mental anguish, and pain and suffering.
