Maricopa County, Arizona
Maricopa County,
Arizona was
named in honor of the
Maricopa Indians, the first known inhabitants of the area.
Established in 1871, Maricopa County became the first of the four
original counties of Territorial
AZ. Maricopa
County's outer boundaries were officially set in 1881 and remain
unchanged to this day.
Those heading to state court in Arizona will go to one of two trial
courts: the
Justice Courts or the
Superior Courts. There are 25 Justice Courts in Maricopa County,
which handle cases where the disputed amount is $10,000 or less,
misdemeanor charges, landlord and tenant issues, and a wide range of civil
and criminal traffic offenses. The Superior Courts act as the trial
courts for the State of Arizona. Superior Courts handle family and
juvenile cases, probate cases, tax issues and numerous civil and criminal
cases. There are several Superior Court locations in the Phoenix
area.

The Phoenix metro area is also the site of 15 colleges and
universities. These include
Grand Canyon University,
Midwestern
University, the
Thunderbird School of Global Management and
Arizona State University.
ASU has campuses in several communities, including two in
Phoenix, and
one each in
Mesa and Tempe.
